Le Bas (British, B. 1963)
Born in 1963 in Sheffield, England, Le Bas had an emotionally troubled childhood and found refuge in his colorful imagination. Initially he drew hundreds of drawings of crowds at soccer matches. A friend saw his work and encouraged him to go to the local art school. Soon he began attending a textiles course at the Royal College of Art. However, his stint in school was short-lived as he was not interested in performing assignments. Soon after he left school, a friend directed him to the Outsider Archives in London and they began to exhibit his work. At the start of a picture, Le Bas never has a plan. He starts out with a little face, then an eye and it grows from there. Le Bas embroiders his world with myriad faces and eyes. Many of the people he draws are set within powerful force fields of colored lines, which Le Bas calls protective. Le Bas likes using colored pencils, oil pastel and graphite. He generally uses bright primary colors which convey his strong sense of design. |
